There have been some positive changes with regard to protecting young people from tobacco marketing, so make sure you are up to date with the latest news, by checking out the Health Bill section in What’s Hot.

Until next time… merry Christmas and have a happy new year (and don’t eat too many mince pies!)

Health Bill- new measures to protect you

After battling to get MP’s to support measures to protect young people from tobacco marketing, on 12 October 2009, the measures were passed in Parliament. Local MP Joan Walley spoke in Parliament in support of the measures, pointing out the high smoking rates in Stoke-on-Trent and suggested that the Government should do more to protect young people from smoking- so thank you and well done Ms Walley!

The measures around the Health Act 2009 were mainly around creating restrictions on how shops should display cigarettes behind the counter. Tobacco companies are well known for trying to target young people by using bright colours and fancy packaging, particularly as most adult smokers already know what brand they will chose before coming in to the shop.

Tobacco companies also need to target young people because they know that many of their adult smokers are dying from smoking-related illnesses, and they know they need to recruit new young smokers to keep them in business.

The Government also voted to ban cigarette vending machines, as these are often unsupervised and many children use them to regularly buy cigarettes underage. Hopefully these measures will help to stop tobacco companies being able to target you guys with marketing gimmicks, and take away the temptation of cigarettes on display for people trying to quit.
