Smoke Free Schools Policy Guidance
A smoke free policy is important for all places where people meet and work together. It is of particular importance that Schools set a good example to the whole School community by promoting a smoke free environment. The implementation of a comprehensive smoke free policy provides positive role modelling for young people and sets the scene to promote non-smoking as the norm.
The Health Act 2006 includes legislation to make virtually all enclosed and substantially enclosed workplaces, including Schools, smoke free by the summer of 2007. This will mean that all Schools will be required to be smoke free in all enclosed buildings, whilst individual decisions will need to be made on arrangements for smoking elsewhere in the School grounds.
The Smoke Free Schools Policy Guidance has been produced to help Schools develop their own policy or to extend and formalise an existing policy. The information is not prescriptive. It is intended that Schools use this resource to support their policy development.
